Quick Simple Wreath

I was looking at my front door today & decided that I needed to put up a wreath. At first I was thinking of putting up my traditional fall wreath....you know one made out of leaves, gourds & etc, but I'm not ready to put that one up yet. So I went into my fabric stash & came up with this. Its made from burlap & white cotton flour sack material (aka dish towels from Target). The best part is that the flowers are just pinned in. This is good because I can change out the flowers for anything else easily & if there's one thing you will learn about me is that I change my mind often. :) The DIY Show Off

It's A Frame Up

I know that these have been all over blogland but I really like them. I figured that since I have some old frames & some chicken wire I would give it a crack. Here they are..I did two with chicken wire & one with burlap to make it a small message board. I used clothespins that I made all fancy with some paper to hold things with. To make things extra purty I also made some feathers out of old maps & sheet music.

These pictures show a close up of the feathers that I made & my fancy clothes pins.

Did you notice my other two "finds".....the cool steel suitcase & the old fan???- I've been looking for a fan with a blue base forever & it was only $10.00.....around here that's a great price!! :)

Linking up with Family memory Board Linky Party from http://blog.familybringsjoy.com ....thanks for the invite :)

The Red Resting Chair

I just finished a chair. I call it my red resting chair. First let me show you a before picture. It's your basic wood chair, no fancy carvings or ornate woodwork, just a wood chair. This is the only picture that I could find & it's not the best, but you get the idea.....don't ya? The minnow baskets that are sitting on it will be featured in another post.......(I'm almost done with them).
I painted the chair Emperor's Silk (chalk paint again, no surprise there) waxed it, and then beat it up a little. I wanted it to look like it's always been that color. I hand painted the bible phrase "come with me by yourselves to a quiet place & get some rest". I was going to use my Silhouette & be all fancy & impeccable but I was going for a different look. I wanted it to look like the writing was put on it a long time ago by someone, not mass produced & perfect. Maybe I should make up a story about it being from an old school & some teacher wrote that on there.....kinda like an old timey "time-out chair"?? Anyway what do you guys think?

A One, A Two And A Three

I almost forgot to post these.....
My silver platters! I found all of three of these at Goodwill (score!) painted them with chalk paint & made fun little chalkboard signs out of them. Please excuse my floors.....3 dogs & 4 kids are not kind to wood...

Fun Quick Stuff

These are a couple of quick little things that I made. These two little birdhouses came from Michael's. I just painted them & used mod podge on them. They turned out cute, my daughter keeps stealing them & putting them in her room.

Next is a little small stool that I found at Goodwill. I forgot to take a before picture but it was yellowish-brown with a picture of peas on it.....it was kinda weird & way ugly. First I painted it gray, then a freehanded a branch on it. I hate using stencils, they drive me nuts! For the bird I drew it out on a page of an old encyclopedia & attached it with mod podge. Have I ever mentioned how much I love that stuff?

Here are two little wooden boxes that I did the same thing to.....painted them pink, drew branches and this time I made a cherry blossom design with paper & mod podge. These turned out really sweet & girly!

A Way To Serve My Bon-Bons

These are some pedestal platters that I made last week. They are a real simple project to do. They are made from various plates & bowls that are just glued to some candlesticks. Very simple,easy-peasy & fun to do. My hubby asked me what am I going to use them for.."serving bon-bons?' Yeah, right. More like Oreos & popcorn around here.
I also have some other more "industrial" ones that I made out of pie plates too. I'll have to post a picture of those too.

It's Starting To Feel Like Fall Around Here

Now that it is officially fall & the weather is confirming this I have started to put up some of my fall decorations. This is a quickie arrangement that I have on our dining room table. Most of the pumpkins & the grapevine tree came from Michaels. The cute little chairs I found at a barn sale for a bargain... (swooped them babies up fast :). The little jar is full of shredded tissue & a vintage picture of a bird, sorry it doesn't show up well here. The little numbered blocks was a fast little project that I did a few weeks ago. I just painted them, stenciled the numbers, & distressed them. I'm thinking about making some more. I was going to make a table runner just like this out of my burlap pile until I stumbled on this one. I liked it so much & of course it was priced right, so it came home with me.

The second picture is my fireplace in our family room. Sorry about the crazy picture but there are windows that flank each side of it. We usually keep the blinds open to let the sun in or else the room gets dark & dreary. I tried taking a picture both ways & neither way worked that well. I'm sure it's only because of my lack of photography skills. Anyway, I apologize....
As you can see we have two, tall deep holes or cubbies above our fireplace. Until recently they were empty. I finally bought some clear vases & used some branches from our birch trees to fill them up. It was quite a mess with me dragging big branches in & trimming them but I think it turned out well. My teenage son thought I was crazy but afterwards he actually complimented me. He basically said "I guess it's not that bad". Take it from me, that's a compliment. I'm thinking about adding some bright fall leaves too but my hubby likes it the way it is. I'll probably add some. :) It's not like I ever really listen to his opinion.....he is learning to just let me "do my thing". On the mantle there's more fake pumpkins that I had, an old broken rolling pin, & a cloche with wire birds underneath it. The antique bean pot was from my great grandmother. Inside there is a handwritten note explaining it's origins that my grandmother wrote. I simply love that bean pot! The three tiered rack in the middle I found at TJ Maxx. It's just filled with more jars & do-dads. The whole mantle is pretty simple but I'm going to spookify it in a week or two for Halloween.......I think this time of year is so much fun!

I love Church Barn Sales!

Every year where I live one of the local churches hosts a huge barn sale. It has gotten to be such a huge event that it is now held at the fair grounds. Luckily for me I only live 10 minutes down the street. So of course I went..yipee!! I found so much stuff there at great prices that my head was spininng. On the second day everything is half price so of course I went then too! My husband was sweet enough to watch our kiddos that I got the luxury of browsing through all the junk & furniture by myself. That's right, you heard it....just me,three building of other people's cast-offs & my pocket full of cash. You can say that I did some damage, but everything was cheap! I got a glass cloche,an old checkerboard,2 small vintage silver serving dishes,2 baskets,an old typesetter's drawer,2 working light fixtures,a huge pile of vintage sheet music, misc. vintage fabrics & lace,a vintage book that lists birth dates with flower planting times for those months,a funky shade from bombay kids, & last but not least a victorian footstool. I have plans for everything too! :) I'm also proud to say that the most expensive item was only $7.00, so hubby even thought that I did well. I will be posting pictures of everything when I'm done so you can all see what I had in mind. I would have bought more my but bag was stuffed & my arms were full & dying from hauling all of my loot! :)

I'm still thinking about the old funky chair that I passed up on the first day only to find it gone the following day :(......will I ever learn?.......

The Little Bench

Here are a few more items that I picked up at a nearby estate sale. A little bench and a fabric covered bulliten board. The board looked like it needed some help, the fabric is really dirty and grungy looking. I haven't started on it yet.....it's in my huge "to do" pile. The little bench was actually from Bombay Company & had been reupholstered. The fabric wasn't bad but I had a different idea for it.

I just finished the bench yesterday. I used chalk paint (which I'm sooo addicted too) & clear wax on it. I then reupholstered it again. Put on a sweet vintage angel graphic from The Graphics Fairy on the seat, added fabric flowers & voila, it's done!!! I hope you guys can see the angel, I didn't want it to be too dark. I think it turned out really great. Maybe if I get lucky I could find an old vintage vanity to pair her up with......hmmmm.....

Quick Hello

Yesterday I spent all day painting & making things. It was a great day,& I had so much fun. I even remembered to take some before pictures! (Can you believe it?!!) I'm off to run around town to try to get my errands done while the kids are in school. So that means I have less then 2 hours before Miss Bossypants (my kindergartner) is home........wish me luck!

By the way- I hope to post some new pictures later on today!

Now That's Better

This is an end table that I found at a nearby estate sale. Nothing was wrong with it & the price was right so it came home with me. After painting it with chalk paint & using dark wax it turned out nice, but it needed something more...
Then I remembered seeing something that I liked. I decided to add a Union Jack flag to the top of it. I was planning to change out the hardware but I like the original stuff. I think the hardware looks prim & proper on it so I think it fits. I'm probably going to sell it since I have no place to put it. My twelve year old wants it badly so I had to make a deal with him.....I'm going to paint his dresser the same way. Of course now I have another project to do...:)

Little Birdies

I have a pile of old frames that I don't want to get rid of but I didn't know what to do with most of them. While browsing through one of my favorite blogs- The Graphics Fairy- I came acroos some sweet bird pictures. I thought that maybe I could do something with them. Well this is what I came up with. This picture is not the best (stupid lighting) but I hope you can see them. I used two of her bird pictures & sweet one of a little nest with eggs. I soaked the pictures in tea to age them before I framed them. The frame was ugly, it looked like something out of 1983 so I never took any before pictures. Take my word on it, it was ugly. I have a bunch of old encyclopedias that I got at a resale shop so I just ripped some pages up & used mod podge to attach them. I then painted the frame black & distressed it. Pretty simple project that I'm happy with.............now if I could just figure out a use for my other dozen frames.

Stuff That I Found

I have been going to a lot barn sales lately...which is a definite bonus to living out here near the corn fields. I'm happy with what I found so I figured that I'd show some of my goodies off to you.
These three items really caught my eye. On top is a vintage check writing machine that I actually found at my nearby Goodwill store. I just love the color of it! It is on top of an old metal bread box & a vintage card catalog. I almost didn't get the card catalog because the guy selling it kept putting it away. He said that he kinda wanted to keep it, but I talked him out of it......(hee hee). For now I have these things in my living room but as I finish painting different rooms in my house I'm sure I will find other, better places for them.

Where Are You Going?

Well it's Saturday in my house which means everyone is up early. We have flag football & soccer to head off to. Of course everyone runs around like crazy trying to find their shoes & all of their equipment. In the middle of this one of my dogs, Bella stops to look at me as if to say "where are you going?".......don't worry we will be back soon!
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend no matter what they have planned :)

Oh My Gosh,Oh My Gosh, Oh My Gosh!!

One thing about me is that I love to go to flea markets, garage sales, estate sales & I also check out Craig's List often. I love to find a bargain. Even when I'm in stores I'm usually shopping the sale racks or "end cap shopping" as I like to call it. I think that I inherited this trait from my mother. My childhood is filled with memories of garage sale hunting every weekend morning. I would save up my chore money & hunt for something to buy. Usually it was a Barbie or a toy but it was always fun! Recently I have been in search of a vintage kitchen scale. I saw one a few months ago at the flea market but I passed it up. That was stupid of me. You would think that I would learn by now that if I see something I like to get it but noooo I didn't that time. I was so mad at myself later because it was only $20.00 which is a great price. I realized this as I continued to look for one & they were all $40.00 or higher. Then I got lucky. Real lucky. While strolling through the flea market a few months later I saw it. It was way across the tent from me. Way, way across from me. There were two women checking it out so I had to kinda hover nearby & act like I was interested in some other junk. Then they walked away so I pounced. I asked the teenager behind the table how much for it & he said $7.00!! I was practically tripping over myself to get my money out fast enough. I didn't even try to talk him down since I was stealing it at that price. I purchased it right away. He kinda looked at me like I was crazy but it didn't matter to me I was happy. I just hope the older lady that was running their table won't be too upset with him for practically giving it away. :)

Nothing like 1970's Laminate!

About a month ago one of my relatives was over & she offered to give me a credenza that she had. I would like to think it's because she saw how badly that I needed storage space but I don't think that was the case. I think her real reason was because she was moving out of state & didn't know what to do with her lovely piece of furniture. It was the kind that was so popular in the 70's. It has genuine fake burl wood laminate & big clunky door knocker type pulls. I'm sure you guys are familiar with this style. Back when I was little I remember my neighbor had a lot of this heavy, chunky overly-ornate furniture. I thought it was so groovy & cool then.....something I could picture in the back ground of a Charlie's Angels episode.....I can see it now- Farrah leaning against it while she flashed her pearly whites & shook out her huge mane of hair. Ok, whatever- I was little & they were my idols! Back to the cabinet- here's the before picture. As you can see from the photo I was in such a hurry to paint over the beauty that I had already taken off the clunky hardware & just started painting the corner when I had to stop to take a picture. Luckily, I remembered...don't want to be a bad blogger!
Here it is afterwards. I used Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White. I then went over it with the clear wax & the dark wax. I finished it off with some new knobs from Target. Now I have the much needed store space & it doesn't look like it belongs in The Charles Townsend Detective Agency office anymore.

The Cabinet That Started It All

I'm happy to announce that I finally got a new camera! I've been playing around with it & so far so good. It seems pretty user friendly & the price was right...thanks to my Target discount card! One thing that you will learn about me is that I'm always on the look out for a bargain or a good deal. I'm pretty frugal.....ok, I'll admit it-I'm cheap. I just don't understand paying full price for something when if you look around & do some research you can usually get it for a better deal. I guess you can say that I "love the hunt". Does anyone remember that DSW Shoe Warehouse commercial from a few years back? The one where it showed the women shopping & compared them to wild animals on the African Serengeti??? Well I relate to that commercial exactly. I wish they still showed it, it cracked me up! Anyway..I'm going to try to post some pictures. They were taken with my old camera so the quality may not be the best ( I never said I was a professional)so bear with me. I hope to improve on this!
This is a picture of a china cabinet that I got off of Craigslist. I got it for a steal & it actually fit in the family truckster without too much squeezing.
The second picture is the cabinet after I painted it. I used Annie Sloan Chalk paint -(which I love)!! You may not be able to tell from the picture but first I painted it with the Duck Egg paint, then a coat of Graphite. I didn't want it too look to solid black so I sanded it in spots so the blue would show through. I then finished it off with the dark wax. I'm pleased with how it turned out :) !
This cabinet was the first piece of furniture that I have done in a few years & as a result it has lit a "spark" in me so I will be posting some more pictures soon.

Never Forget

Today is September 11th. I am sure that everyone remembers where they were & what they were doing on this day 10 years ago. I'm not going to recount where I was or my feelings then & now. I am just going to take a moment to myself. A moment to remember. A moment to pray. But most of all I am going to step outside into the sunshine & the warm breeze. Feel the sun on my face and listen to the sounds of nothing & yet everything all at once. Here I will take a deep breath & be thankful for everything I have........but I will also shed some tears remembering everything.....& knowing that I will never forget.

debbiedoo's giveaway blabs: Fairy Hobmother, Make a wish!

Such a great way to do a give away!!debbiedoo's giveaway blabs: Fairy Hobmother, Make a wish!

I Give Up, So It's Time To Shop

It's official. My camera is ca-poot, dead in the water, finished or as I like to put it - died & gone off to camera heaven. Thankfully I have saved all of my photos on those memory cards.  I was smart to listen to my crazy hoarding side & not click on the "delete all photos off memory card" button every time I downloaded photos. See- sometimes it is good to be a pack rat :)! My next order of business is buying a new camera asap! I hope to decide on one sometime this week. I want one that will take great photos but that won't be too difficult to use. It's not that I can't handle a fancy-schmancy camera with all the bells & whistles that can do everything, it's just that I want to keep it simple. I've actually taken some photography courses so I would know how to use all those settings. But the actual part about photography that I liked wasn't so much taking the photos (don't get me wrong- I do like that too)...it was playing with the images in the darkroom. That part rocked my world! If I could have a darkroom & afford all the chemicals I probably would. ........ someday.......sigh.....
Anyway-  need to get a camera asap because I have oodles of things that I want to show you!!!
